Trump is poised to win. How did that happen? I guess the world is just so badly fucked that anything is possible.
Clinton’s great mantra was “it’s the economy, stupid’. That still holds but is combined with a narrative about who controls reality, and who can put out enough lies and make gullible people believe them. Or put another way, “it’s about the stupid, stupid”.
Rather absurdly I couldn’t help thinking about the Hay Festival in six months time. By then, four months into the second Trump era, we will know if the world really is about to see a seismic shift away from democracy. What will the mood in the marquees be?
Best case scenario? The scare stories of a wholesale dismantling of freedom are just that. The dysfunctional beast that is the US lumbers on and Trump remains an absurd and grotesque head, rotting visibly. Real control resides with the likes of Musk and Bezos god help us, but they are not really keen to change anything. Why should they? Civil war would be bad for business. The status quo ante suits them fine.
Actually there is no best case scenario. The Ukraine will fall without American funding. Israel will occupy Gaza permanently. The environment will tip, irrevocably. Minorities will suffer. Women will suffer. The truth will suffer. Trump hates Keir Starmer so the UK will suffer.
